Warning: This article contains spoilers for episode one of series 10.
Our favourite detective is finally back on our screens – and the first episode of Vera kept viewers clinging to the edge of their seats.
In a rather complex case, DCI Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) had to unravel the circumstances of self-styled entrepreneur Freddie Gill’s (Jonathan Spencer) death when his body was found by bailiffs attempting to repossess his house.
Freddie was estranged from his wife and son – Jade (Charlotte Pyke) and Riley Gill (Josh Barrow) – who moved back to live at her family’s beloved pub with her formidable mother Tina Tripp (Marian McLoughlin), volatile brother Lee (Brian Lonsdale) and taciturn uncle Darren (Barry Aird).
Matters are further complicated when Vera found out that Jade’s father Arthur, having recently succumbed to terminal illness, had secretly been keeping ties with Freddie despite him having been ejected from the family.
It all comes to a head when Freddie’s business partner gets attacked and his business is targeted by an arson attack – and well, we all know how it ends as Vera gets her man (as if we ever questioned her).
And despite Vera being happy with the result of her case, we still feel like there are some unanswered questions from episode one.
Was the murderer’s brother in on it?
Ok so maybe we didn’t see it coming…but did you notice the look the brothers gave each other towards the end of episode one?
Vera finally got her man, but she didn’t seem happy about the result….will this come back to haunt the detective?
How will Freddie’s murder link to the rest of the series?
Series 10 of the hit ITV drama has a slight twist as there will be four self-contained stories, but we don’t think it will stop at that.
The question is, will Freddie’s murder be linked to the rest of the series – and how will they link it?
Episode two titled Parent Not Expected is a story that includes a salmon fishing farm – the first episode heavily centred around the relationship between a father and son, so how will this play out in the second episode?
Why did it take the detectives so long to find Laura?
OK so we may not be a detective, but do the clues that led to the murder really add up?
Freddie was found murdered at his home (which was in the middle of nowhere) and he was having an affair with Laura Whitelock – but in a real murder investigation would it have taken them so long to find her body as it was so close to the house?
Surely after discovering Freddie, they would have done an extensive search of the grounds….
Any clues about episode two?
As if we have to wait a whole week for the next episode…
Taking about episode two actress Brenda and Kenny teased fans about what happens.
She exclaimed: ‘Episode two, Parent Not Expected, is a story that includes a salmon fishing farm. We filmed that at Burnmouth in the Scottish Borders and other places including Alnwick, Whitley Bay and the Woodhorn Museum near Ashington.’
Kenny added: ‘The themes are quite expansive. In the opening episode the writer Paul Logue has looked at justice, the implications of financial problems and what really is family blood and loyalty.
‘Episode two really resonated with my character Aiden as it talks about fatherhood, parenting, and belonging.’
Until next week then…
Vera airs on Sunday at 8pm on ITV.
